Please remember there is no school on Monday, May 30 to honor our serviceman and celebrate Memorial Day.  We will see you all on Tuesday, May 31.

The SPRING DANCE/TUMBLING SHOW "Newsies" was fabulous.  It was so wonderful to see all three divisions of the school come together under the direction of Jessi Wunder to create an amazing show.
See more pictures at the bottom of the blog.

CULMINATION NIGHT for Kindergarten-Fourth Grade, Monday, June 6 5:00-6:00 p.m. Information has been sent out by me and by the teachers.  These are truly wonderful events where you see how much progress your children have made this year!  We hope to see you all there.

END OF THE YEAR OUTING: SUNSET WOODS PARK, HIGHLAND PARK Wednesday, June 8 10:00-2:30 Everyone send good thoughts for good weather! Again, information was sent to you.  It is always a fabulous way to end the school year.  You are all welcome to join us.  We do ask you to drive as there is no extra room on the bus.  Directions are attached to the email accompanying the blog.

There is still room in both DISCOVERY UNLIMITED AND CAMP. Because the NU Center For Talent Development will be using our building this summer, Discovery will take place the first two weeks after school is out, June 13-24.
A full description of the Discovery and Camp offerings are at www.roycemoreschool.org/summer. You will also find a link for online registration.

Discovery is starting a week before camp this year.  Therefore we will be offering an Extended Day Program until 3:00 p.m. for those of you who need childcare for the first week.  The children will be able to cycle into camp as usual for the second week, so we will be having childcare until our usual 6:00 for that week.

PICTURES THIS WEEK:
1. The First Grade is in the middle of their Biomimicry Unit. They research an animal, create a book of their research and then "invent" something that mimics's their animal.  Here are fur pants that mimic his study of the wolf.

2. The Second Grade invited the parents and other classes to their "Rainforest"  The students had transformed their room into that habitat. Each student became an animal in one of the layers of the rainforest, researched that animal, wrote a three paragraph paper, and gave an oral presentation on what he/she had learned. Excuse some of the dark pictures, but the understory of the rainforest is dark!

   3. The PK, JK and K kids all went to the zoo.  They loved this field trip!

4. The early childhood classes studied life cycles. The Pre-Kindergarten studied butterflies, the Junior Kindergarten studied ants, and the Kindergarten studied lady bugs.  This picture is showing the release of the butterflies.

The CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION WEEKEND was amazing!  This is a picture from the Party of the Century, which really was just that!  It was so much fun. I loved seeing so many of you at the old building, and on to today at the Rooftop to see a Cubs' game.  What a weekend!!!  to celebrate 100 years! Thank you to everyone who made it a huge success for our school! See more pictures at the bottom of the blog.

ROYCEMORE ALUM AND AUTHOR MELANIE ABED TALKED TO OUR 3RD-6TH GRADE STUDENTS FRIDAY, MAY 13
We were so lucky that author and Roycemore alum, Melanie Abed whose book Anni Moon and the Elemental Artifact delighted students, came in for the Centennial weekend and talked to our students of how she became an author.  I have known Melanie since she was 14 years old, as she graduated from Roycemore with my daughter.  We are thrilled that she is here.  She is shown here with my daughter Michelle Lazar and Elke Kenyon all Roycemore alums.

Technology Use Survey
You should have received an email last week from Educational Technology Coordinator Beth Shutters regarding a brief survey to help us plan our investments in technology. Parents, teachers, and students will participate in the survey, which should only take about 5 minutes. Thank you for your help! Click here to take the survey.

YOUNG EVANSTON ARTISTS (YEA): SATURDAY MAY 21
Each year Roycemore participates in the Young Evanston Artists festival.  Every art student from Kindergarten through Grade 12 will have artwork displayed from 10:00 AM-4:00PM in Raymond Park, at the intersection of Lake and Chicago Ave.  We hope you all will come see our students amazing artwork.  I promise we always have one of the best booths at the show.

PARENT VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
The YEA Festival is on Saturday, May 21.  Volunteers are need on Friday May 20 to lead the bus and on Saturday May 21 to help set up the booth, relieve Mrs. O'Donnell and Ms. Hecht at the booth, and to help take down the booth and load the bus.  On Sunday volunteers can help upload the bus.  All art students at Roycemore will be represented at our booth, so all Lower School students in Kindergarten through 4th Grade will have pieces in the show.  If you are available for any of the above times, please register at www.signupgenius.com/go/20f0e4dada92ba5fb6-yeaart

PICTURES THIS WEEK:

1. Last week I talked about the value of unstructured play at recess.  The one issue is if a child has no one to play with.  To solve that problem at Roycemore, we have a buddy table.  If a child has no one to play with, he/she sits down and other children seeing them there will come over and ask them to play.  Here are two boys at the buddy table, but did not want to play with each other.  Other children saw them and invited them to play with them.  Each child went off  and had a very happy recess playing games and soccer!

2.  Beth Shutters our Technology Director came into the 3rd Grade to teach them Citizen Science, where students help real scientists conduct real investigations.
